‘Mushroom Shade’ in first screening-Just Malawi Music

By Jimmy Chazama:

A movie titled Mushroom Shade, which stems from the drama series ‘Mushroom Shade’, premiered at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Saturday.

This was the first showing for Malawi after its debut in Atalanta, United States of America (USA).

People showed up for the red-carpet event, where patrons included Film Association of Malawi (Fama) President Dorothy Kingston and partner amapiano star Zeze.

Fashioned by USA-based filmmaker Chawezi Chaz Munthali, also known for Misnomer and Highbrow movies, the film provided the much-needed entertainment to patrons.

‘Mushroom Shade’ drama series has been fun for movie lovers, such that Chaz decided to graduate it into a full film.

The firm stars actors such as renowned musicians Bucci and Onesimus, emcee Cynthia Zonde Zulu and broadcaster Mwai Simbota and the State Second Vice- President’s spouse Tadala Chihana.

MOVIE NIGHT—Chisiza family members receive Du’s award

Mushroom Shade reflects local social realities, particularly issues surrounding family, inheritance and relationships.

“Most Malawians were complaining about short episodes and, as such, we extracted one storyline and made it into a big film. In fact, two films will come out,” Chaz said.

He said in order to broaden the fan base, they decided to bring in actors such as Zambian TikTok star Victor Ivyic.

Executive producer Ben Wandawanda hailed feedback from patrons.

“It is always humbling when you put in a lot of work and see people appreciating it,” he said.

On her part, the Fama leader said the premiere of the film, which goes to Apollo Auditorium in Blantyre next month, meant growth for the industry.

“This is a good film, one that stands out not only locally but also internationally. We are making positive strides,” she said.

Powered by FDH Bank and the Copyright Fund, the night also rekindled memories of theatre maestro Du Chisiza Jr, the brains behind Wakhumbata Ensemble Theatre (Wet), who was posthumously decorated with a special award that was received by his family.

With several plays to his acclaim, including Pumashakire, Educating Mwalimu and Democracy Boulevard, Du—who died in 1999—helped elevate the creative sector and inspired several actors.
